From Beam Paints:
“When I make paint I think about my Dad a lot, he taught me when I was really small to identify hematite and look for paintstones. He kept them in his art bag in a little cloth wrapper, and when he needed paint he brought them out and prepared his paint for ceramic bowls, drums, or rocks. I really wanted something of my paint making practice to share the tactile joy of the physicality of paint, and this is it!
These little jewels are also about our values and support our respect for the earth and being plastic free. They are wrapped in beeswaxed cotton with paper labels identifying the color name and are our answer to halfpans! They are 7/8 inch across from edge to edge of the wrapper and 5/8 inch across the paint. Free your art kit!!!”

Granulating watercolor half pans by Issy.Watercolors – handmade in the Netherlands!
From Issy:
“The paint is handmade. Little bubbles, cracks and sticky spots are normal. Paints can shrink overtime and fall out. If the paint falls out of the well, add a drop of water in the well and press the paint back in. Big air bubbles can occur.
Handmade paints work differently than generic brands. For the best results, add a drop of water to the paint and let it sit for about 2-5 minutes. Use your wet brush to pick up some paint and swirl it into a mixing palette. Add more water for the pigments to flow freely and separate and granulate.
All paints are Vegan! Made with nothing but Gum Arabic, Water, vegetable glycerin, Vegan Ox Gall, Corn Syrup and Tea Tree oil. We do not use clove oil.”

The “So Here We Are” Collection is about surviving, then thriving. This is a celebration of moving through fear and chaos to discover joy in a new life, a new time. From mid March to late July this collection of watercolor and gouache paintings came to life. As the months passed darker and dramatic colors were replaced with transparent brights. As my heart found peace amid chaos, intensity gave way to lightness. Paintings were purposely not finished in any one given month or feeling. So each is the result of layering not only paint, but time and feelings.
I most often work on a small scale but dive deeply with layer after layer of paint. Details are added with the tiniest of brushes to trick and train the eye to see something new at every glance. My work is brazen in color, free from pretense but riddled with seemingly unending texture and linear detail. Best when viewed up close and curious when seen from a distance.

Some of my earliest memories are of my Father’s peonies. I wondered what these large raspberry colored blooms were and why ants seemed to love them so much. And now, my Father transplanted specimens of those same peonies to my home garden and every May I anxiously await the first pop of a bud with just a hint of the raspberry petal peeking. Peonies for me mean family. And this year they bloomed at a time when I needed the reminder that this little family I created is all that I needed.

These flowers don’t exist in real life. They never will. But I paint a flower I want to see, one I wish/will to exist. Just like I imagine and work towards a near and distant future I and my children can be proud of, I paint what I want to see.

Southern Utah is where I first met a Prickly Pear cactus and I was in love. When designing the gardens for our home in Pennsylvania, I tried to incorporate as many desert plants as possible. And so now hardy Prickly Pear cacti grow all over our property. Each year I anxiously await the pop of those yellow blooms. This year the blooming coincided perfectly with our strawberry harvest.

I originally created this illustration of Kamala Harris the weekend after the 2020 election in preparation for my daughter’s 1st birthday. We couldn’t have many guests at her party so I created life size cut outs of powerful women to fill seats!
Since then, this image of Vice President Kamala Harris has become beloved amongst my social media following. On the morning of January 20, 2020 I paired these words with my sketch and the rest is history.
Her strength, vision and grit calls to us from this humble sketch.

“Inspired by the incomparable patron saint of women artists, Frida Kahlo. Magnificent artist whose home was casa azul, who graced the cover of vogue Paris with a straight on gaze that went down in history. Also an artist in her personal appearance, bringing indigenous influence from her life to her canvases to her hair and dress. We honour her with these colors calling to mind the vivid lushness of her paintings.”
