The “So Here We Are” Collection is about surviving, then thriving. This is a celebration of moving through fear and chaos to discover joy in a new life, a new time. From mid March to late July this collection of watercolor and gouache paintings came to life. As the months passed darker and dramatic colors were replaced with transparent brights. As my heart found peace amid chaos, intensity gave way to lightness. Paintings were purposely not finished in any one given month or feeling. So each is the result of layering not only paint, but time and feelings.

I most often work on a small scale but dive deeply with layer after layer of paint. Details are added with the tiniest of brushes to trick and train the eye to see something new at every glance. My work is brazen in color, free from pretense but riddled with seemingly unending texture and linear detail. Best when viewed up close and curious when seen from a distance.

One of the last paintings created for this series. Delicate, almost fragile at first glance, these blooms are strong when you look closest. Let these soft petals be a reminder to always examine beyond appearances. Let them become a call to rise above what makes you feel incapable, and a mission harking to that which gives you strength.

An awakening. This is the first piece created once the fog of March and April began to lift. It felt lighter, calmer and delicate and a perfect resting place for my tender thoughts at the time. I was waking up again.

This is a painting of longing to be somewhere you cannot go. Only in Southern Utah do the pink Prickly Pear cactus bloom until now. While we may not be able to move as freely through life as we once did, we can transform what is in front of us.

This is a painting of transformation. Only in Southern Utah do the pink Prickly Pear cactus bloom until now. So much of what I’ve feared for most of my adult life in many ways has come true. I feared instability, financial uncertainty, loss of health. Despite it all, my mind has been undergoing a transformation. Learning the fears we hold onto are not nearly as terrifying as they seem is nothing short of transformative.

These white anemones launched my licensing career and have been seen on more products that I can truly count. But their popularity in mass market is not the beginning or end of their story. This painting marks a time in my career when I first trusted myself artistically. The style I’d dabbled with for years suddenly felt like home in this painting. Delicate strokes balanced with the boldness of unexpected color choices and a mingling of intricate detailing became my voice here. This painting changed me forever and I hope and pray it changes you a little too.
