The “So Here We Are” Collection is about surviving, then thriving. This is a celebration of moving through fear and chaos to discover joy in a new life, a new time. From mid March to late July this collection of watercolor and gouache paintings came to life. As the months passed darker and dramatic colors were replaced with transparent brights. As my heart found peace amid chaos, intensity gave way to lightness. Paintings were purposely not finished in any one given month or feeling. So each is the result of layering not only paint, but time and feelings.

I most often work on a small scale but dive deeply with layer after layer of paint. Details are added with the tiniest of brushes to trick and train the eye to see something new at every glance. My work is brazen in color, free from pretense but riddled with seemingly unending texture and linear detail. Best when viewed up close and curious when seen from a distance.

Some of my earliest memories are of my Father’s peonies. I wondered what these large raspberry colored blooms were and why ants seemed to love them so much. And now, my Father transplanted specimens of those same peonies to my home garden and every May I anxiously await the first pop of a bud with just a hint of the raspberry petal peeking. Peonies for me mean family. And this year they bloomed at a time when I needed the reminder that this little family I created is all that I needed.

These flowers don’t exist in real life. They never will. But I paint a flower I want to see, one I wish/will to exist. Just like I imagine and work towards a near and distant future I and my children can be proud of, I paint what I want to see.

Southern Utah is where I first met a Prickly Pear cactus and I was in love. When designing the gardens for our home in Pennsylvania, I tried to incorporate as many desert plants as possible. And so now hardy Prickly Pear cacti grow all over our property. Each year I anxiously await the pop of those yellow blooms. This year the blooming coincided perfectly with our strawberry harvest.

Hellbores are the first to burst from the ground in late Winter. Hellebores or Lenten Roses are the epitome of strength and survival. I worked on this painting off and on from the very beginning of March to the very beginning of August. This piece is a bookend to all that was and all that most certainly will be. This piece is singular hope in good days to come. This piece is hope in action amidst the good days already happening.

Fuchsia. Oh blessed Fuchsia, I wish you were with us all year long. It’s okay to wish for beauty we don’t have in front of us right at the moment. It’s okay to hope. Here, Fuchsias represent hope…hope for times more light, days less heavy and hope for words bubbling up in peace.

What began as a demo piece evolved into a spirited expression of my love for materials. It’s uncommon for a painter to find moments where confidence flows evenly from beginning to end but this painting represents one of those rare moments. I didn’t question each stroke or color choice, I simply painted with every cell, no looking back.

My husband’s late Uncle Andy was the patriarch of a family I was welcomed into over 25 years ago. He was a brilliant man, good with his hands and only better with his brain. He made us all proud to be family. He worked a lifetime at a local nursery. He had a green thumb, of course, but oddly loved to build equipment to make the nursery run more efficiently. Every Winter he’d begin seedlings that would eventually become massive, bountiful hanging baskets of blooms for every household of our family. He’d drive the nursery delivery truck to each home and gift us the largest, most impressive plants you can imagine. One basket was always a coral begonia. She’d rain blossoms all summer long. I’d snip them to float in water and just as fast they would grow back. This one is for you, Uncle Andy. I still have a begonia hanging basket every summer and it reminds me of you.

Our home is settled on over 40 acres of retired farming property and 2020 has become the year of exploring close to home. Evening quad rides have become our family’s go to for moments of relaxation and reprieve. One evening in June, we coasted through one of our fields and I spotted this curious flower over and over again. We slowed the quad so I could investigate closer. After cutting a stem I knew. I was experiencing Milkweed for the very first time.

Pink Magnolias start popping up in our yard mid May and always make a second appearance in early August. This painting intended to celebrate our magic pink magnolias, but I couldn’t bring myself to lose the brightness and clarity of the white petals I’d admired as the painting’s background was created.

I’ve always hated my hands. Too chunky and un-elegant somehow. But sometime last year after posting a rare photo of my hands someone reminded me of all the good work these hands do. What about yourself do you despise despite its ability to serve you well? This painting is about aspects of my style I’ve never given enough credit to – big strokes, casual silhouettes, intensely black backgrounds. I’ve avoided these details because they weren’t trendy but why when these details work together much like a beautifully crafted symphony?

For years I’ve grown Icelandic Poppies just outside my door. Without fail they would pop every May without coaxing. This year they disappeared. Amidst the deep of 2020 this felt like a loss. A real loss. But I chose to spin the experience into what could only be described as a win. And so I purchased new poppy plants, planted them and watched them wither away inexplicably and so all I was left with was paint. I painted my dear Poppies back into existence. Weeks passed by and with each small mark or fluid gesture of my brush, I realized the excitement of the Poppies lived deep inside me. The were not lost, or dead, they were waiting to be revealed again.
